This was the beginning of a new page for Chengeta

Aligned with our social responsibility and commitment to the local community, the decision to assist in the building of a new school in 2008 for the children of Chengeta Primary was an easy one!

The original school, located in old tobacco drying sheds on a farm situated on the main Ngezi Road, an equal distance from both Chengeta and Pamuzinda where most of the children of our staff attended. The existing “school buildings” were proving inadequate both in terms of size and facilities and so the decision was taken to build a new school.

Shelter & Structure Upgrade

Without the proper equipment and resources, the children often found themselves sitting on the floor. Our first step was to manufacture and supply a number of desks and benches for the pupils to sit at. At more or less the same time, we also managed to obtain a suitable site for the proposed school, an open area of land where local cattle frequently gazed.

With support from the local community and parents, we were able to produce an enormous number of farm bricks which facilitated with the build of the first double classroom, along with a toilet block of several cubicles.

Water & Power Upgrades

There was no running water on the site, but a very large metal drum was obtained in Harare and this was set up and filled, when required, with water, carried in by tractor. A visit by an elderly water diviner highlighted a potential spot for a borehole which was duly drilled and to our delight, the water gushed out, ensuring a constant supply of fresh water for not only the school, but also the local population and their animals.

At this point, the thing that was still lacking was a source of power. Fortunately, due to the generosity of many benefactors and local businesses a solar system was installed for both the school and Teachers' accommodation has been installed.

Turning the power on and connecting Chengeta.

Installing power will enable us to move on to the provision of computer training and its associated technology - so important throughout today's world for a successful economy and the employment prospects of the students concerned. The initial number of children expected to attend was approximately 240 and that has now blossomed to a total of over 600 between the two schools. The Primary School has some 430 and the Secondary.

School approximately half that number. We could never have visualized, what our initially small project would develop into. From the humble beginnings of one double classroom and toilet block for primary age children, it has now grown into a total of eight double classrooms split between the two schools and a second toilet block has been added together with a fine assembly hall, kitchen and administration offices.

& Helping Communities

Zambezi Cruise and Safaris that incorporates either Chengeta Safari Lodge or Pamuzinda Safari Lodge, offer a guided tour of the school and its facilities as an optional extra activity. This provides an ideal opportunity to see, at first hand, our progress to date – despite all the obstacles we’ve encountered – and be able to contribute to our continued plans for the future either financially or materially.

Gifts of the likes of pens, pencils, crayons, colouring books or, indeed, anything that would appeal or be useful to school age children anywhere, would be thankfully received and welcomed with open arms.
